Being a natural product that has been exposed to all weather conditions, cow skin rugs are resilient, durable, and virtually maintenance free, apart from the odd shake outside to remove dirt and refresh the pile, and spot cleaning any stains or spills.
In native tribes, animal hides were worn and also used for shelter. Once the skin is removed from the animal, the hide is taken to a tannery to undergo "tanning", which cures the hide to prevent it from decomposing and increase it's long term durability. Hides can also be processed for other leather products such as bags, shoes, clothing and wallets.
